BAF, I'm not sure on the size of my burco but I'd guess it is 2 gallons. I only ever do a maximum of 4/5 pints of hemp. The hemp will swell during cooking. Depending on the quality of hemp I have seen...

BAF, Gary has covered the subject nicely. I soak mine for 24hrs in cold water, then bring the Burko to the boil, turn it off and let it stew for 12hrs. IanWindsor Barbel Catchers

Another vote for the pressure cooker. Hemp in Cover with water Bring up to pressure Cook for 20-30 mins Job done. There isn't zero smell, but I don't find it all that strong. R.

Said it before but found a slow cooker very convenient. Soak it in the cooker for a few hours or more then slow cook for a few hours - pure convenience for smaller quantities say a few litres....

Burcos smell like mad in my experiance {ex tackle shop worker} but we used to get a good 20kg inside ours so maybe thats why :P and bicarb seems to make it go blacker but thewn again i dont suppose...

i soak 3 pints for 2 days and cook for 20 minutes on a camping stove in an ordinary pan that the wife threw out.i leave overnight and use or fridge.the seeds dont need to be all split in any case....

another way for small amounts is to pour boiling water on and in a bucket with a tight lid overnight.i always soak first for 2 days. albert

David, It sounds to me very much like there was something wrong with your pressure cooker, i.e. the pressure relief was blocked. I've used pressure cookers for years to cook all sorts of pulses...
